In 2025, the abortion lobby collected the one million signatures needed to submit a proposal to the European Commission: the creation of a new European fund to finance abortion. 920,000 euros were spent, at an average of 0.80 euros per signature. This was the My Voice My Choice initiative.

Despite this funding, the abortion lobby’s first disappointment was failing to gather as many signatures as we did. In 2014, the One of Us initiative, for which Grégor Puppinck served as spokesperson, had gathered nearly two million signatures calling for the protection of the human embryo. This was achieved at a cost of 0.07 euros per signature—11 times less than My Voice My Choice.

The pro-abortion lobby’s second disappointment was the European Commission’s refusal to create a European pro-abortion fund. To analyze this decision by the Commission, announced on February 26, 2026, we participated in a public meeting at the European Parliament. This meeting, held on March 11, 2026, led to the formation of a right-wing coalition for life. About fifteen Members of the European Parliament were present, representing the entire right-wing spectrum.

The meeting was opened by Margarita de la Pisa, a Spanish MEP who is part of “Patriots for Europe.” Two other political groups officially sponsored the event: the “European People’s Party,” the largest group in the Parliament, and the “European Conservatives and Reformists.”

The organizers asked Nicolas Bauer, advocacy officer at the ECLJ, to share a legal analysis of the Commission’s communication on My Voice My Choice. Although this communication rejected the demands of the pro-abortion lobby, it notes that European funds already finance abortion at the request of Member States. As an example, in 2024 the European Union funded the establishment of the “Women’s House” («Maison des femmes») in downtown Le Havre. One million euros, with the specific goal of “reducing” unwanted and early pregnancies. When a woman calls this center, an automated voice immediately offers her an abortion: “For a voluntary termination of pregnancy, press 1”.

We must challenge the legal framework that makes such European funding possible. And that is one of the goals of this coalition of right-wing parties for life.

This petition was registered with the European Parliament last week (No.0194/2026) and will be examined in the coming months. It was submitted by Charlène, a courageous woman who had testified about her abortion at the European Parliament last October, at the invitation of French MEP Laurence Trochu (ECR) and alongside, notably, Christophe Gomart (EPP).

The union of the right-wing parties for life is excellent news.
