“Debaptism”: Will the EU require the Church to erase its records upon request?
Share

Soon, the Court of Justice of the European Union (Luxembourg) and the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg) could order the Catholic Church to permanently erase from its records any mention of individuals who request it. Such a ruling would cause great turmoil within the Church, as it would no longer be possible to know with certainty who has been baptized, confirmed, or married…

Behind this attack lies the anti-Christian lobby of Libre Pensée and the Centre d’Action Laïque, which hopes to find in European law a means to combat the Church. The threat is serious, as the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Ms. Medina, has issued opinions that lean in favor of a right to complete erasure.

The ECLJ has requested to intervene in the case before the ECHR.

Grégor Puppinck, director of the ECLJ, explains the arguments and implications of these important cases in our Monthly interview.
