Petition addressed to the Presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
Mr. President,
Christians in Turkey are facing extinction, having been oppressed and massacred to the point where they represented only 20% of the population in 1915 and 0.3% today.
Even today, Christians are victims of physical and verbal violence, discrimination, and the plundering of their religious heritage.
Once again, hundreds of foreign Christians have been expelled from Turkey in recent years, solely because of their religion, after sometimes living there for more than 25 years with their families.
The regular condemnations of the European Court of Human Rights often remain ineffective and unenforced.
It is time for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to have the courage to address this tragedy. The Council of Europe must document and officially condemn this situation, and initiate European political action in support of these communities.
To this end, we are submitting this petition to you, Mr. President, in accordance with Rule 71 of the Assembly's Rules of Procedure.
In support of this petition, you will find the report on “The persecution of Christians in Turkey.”
