On Thursday, the 27th of April, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, adopted, by 38 votes against 19, a Resolution as well as a Recommendation (44 votes against 19) on The protection of the rights of parents and children belonging to religious minorities.
In favour of reasonable accommodation and noting the rising religious diversity in Europe, the text of the Resolution has the merit to invite States to “affirm” and “protect the right of all not to be compelled to perform actions that go against their deeply held moral or religious beliefs”. The Resolution also recalls the right of parents to provide their children with an education in conformity with their own religious and philosophical convictions under Article 2 of Protocol No.1 to the Convention.
