Professor Boštjan Zupančič, who was a judge and chamber president at the European Court of Human Rights between 1998 and 2016, a judge at Slovenia's Constitutional Court and vice-chairman of the UN Committee against Torture, has been making anti-Semitic comments on the social network X (formerly Twitter) for several months.
As the ECLJ Director Grégor Puppinck told The Jewish Chronicle:
I took him out of our ‘fellows’ when I was informed of his antisemitism. It was a surprise as his reputation was high at the court. The ECLJ fully condemns antisemitism.
There should be no room for antisemitism, especially within human rights institutions. The ECLJ is actively supportive of the Jewish community and Israel.
Mr. Zupančič has never been an employee of the ECLJ, but received the title of "Research Fellow" at the ECLJ between 2020 and 2022. His collaboration with the ECLJ merely consisted of an interview and his support for legal briefs. The ECLJ withdrew him from the list of "Research Fellow" in 2022.
